“The Journal also posits that places like Amazon delete negative reviews so they can sell more products. And I’ve heard from others that they only post positive reviews . . .”

I know from personal experience that authors email friends when they have a new book coming out and ask them to post a review on Amazon, even before they’ve had a chance to read it. I also know that authors of specialized niche books sometimes have friends post dismissive rejections of their competitors.

I have no reason to doubt that the same thing happens with the free-for-all reviewing or restaurants. As usual when there’s money to be made, if it can be done, it will be done.

It’s all an offshoot of the new cheap journalism in which publishers, both on and off line, “export” their labor, just like multinational corporations, to Bloggerland, where writers will work for little or nothing. In the end, we must rely on those fortunate few, such as the proprietor of this site, who have the taste, the time and the independent means to tell the truth.

Thank you.

"....authors of specialized niche books sometimes have friends post dismissive rejections of their competitors." Sounds like 1st year med students moving the pins around on Anatomy Exams.
