Ingres drawings at the Romantic Life Museum

    

While there are many drawings of Ingres in this exhibition at the Musee de la Vie Romantique in Paris, what was arresting to me was the number of preparatory sketches for the Martyrdom of St Symphonien which hangs in Autun.  When you look at the reproduction of the painting it seems a modest composition, but the incredible care Ingres took on each person portrayed is impressive.

A show worth going to until January 4th aside from the spectacular setting.
