The Bistrot Volnay has become a favorite of mine and Colette's and because we've enjoyed it so much, we brought our two downstairs' friends/neighbors who've had an 18-month hiatus from Paris. The 2-course menu for 32 E and 3 for 36 E cannot be beat especially when game is on it with few supplements.
Mr. P. started with the bio egg and pig's feet with bacon; Colette had three St Jacques on pureed lettuce and I had the weakest entree of the three, needing a boost from some salt, a soup of poule faisan with brousse cheese and minced chestnuts.
For our mains, Madame P. had the farm chicken with potatoes and bacon, Colette had a piece of bass on big white beans with bits of ham, and the two boys each had the marcassin with an intensely dark sauce and wonderful fall/winter vegetables. Madame the hostess came over and asked was it tender or firm - I answered that it had to be really wild boar not one kept in a fenced-in phony game area and she indicated it was - thus it was tough but tasty - the trade-off for the real stuff.
We finished up with some classic crepes, Grandma's rice pudding and classic Grand Marnier souffle.
Our bill, with two bottles of wine, one Chateldon, 4 Cafés Lomi (offered, after I said we hadn't consumed the 6 listed on the bill - which was a most generous response to a young waitperson's error) was 91.75 E a couple.
Go back? Before game season is over for sure.
