Where to start? Right now the Pinacotheque of Paris, which some genius set up in the last decade as an alternate space for special exhibitions and whose judgment on what to show is spot-on (or at least I agree with him/her), is showing two incredible shows, both tied into the theme of the Birth of a Museum.
One showcases the Hermitage holdings the Romanov family donated to this St Petersburg museum and the other the collection of the Esterhazy family from the Budapest Fine Arts Museum.
You enter into either and are dazzled by works that don't travel a lot and while, by very very well-known artists, are largely unknown to us, except through photographs and catalogs. I cannot even try to list the famous painters and works but do the names Rembrandt, Steen and Raphael ring a bell?
Three Wows!
thanks for the tip.........sounds wonderful!
