5.1 Le Rouge et Verre, 8 rue de Maubeuge in the 9th (whose first iteration was on the Rue Brunel in the 17th in 2002, then known as the Domaines qui montent) is a place we fell back upon after a long discussion with my friend N. who lives/works nearby and needed to go to and get back to work from easily.
Like many caves a vin or caves a manger, its tables and chairs are nestled in among stacks of wines from various regions and there's an almost hominess here.
Madame chose the terrific Basque charcuterie platter for a first and I had what was called a garbure but in reality was a sort of Gascogne minestrone with duck, as she pointed out, quite sufficent for a cold day as our waiter, who looked like an aristo working below his grade level, noted. We were celebrating World Vegan Day so we also had a bottle of fine Moselle Pinot Noir.
Said waiter had shown and allowed us to sniff the black truffles from Provence but I, not being a truffles-guy, encouraged her to have the veal made with these funghi, while I enjoyed the stuffed cabbage with lots of vegetables, again showing my strong support of World Vegan Day.
With the wine, no bottled water, quite good bread and two coffees our bill was 50.40 E.
While en route to the loo, I noted the fine tables in the basement seating 12 for private parties, again situated among cases of wine which I couldn't help scoping and buying a bottle of red from the Ile de Porquerolles (who even knew they grew grapes there?) Speaking of which, this is one of the few wine bars in town, that I know of, that charges no corkage fee; wines at your table or to take out are the same price.
Go? If your friend lives/works nearby and says she won't schlep over to the 15th, why not?
