4.0 La Rotonde, 105 blvd du Montparnasse in the 6th, 01.43.26.68.84 (Metro: Vavin), open 7/7, is a place I keep hearing about as the "best of the brasseries," so despite the years of passing it by, today I entered. The carte as one would expect, is like all its siblings, and the décor, similar; the only difference was the service, which was subpar from welcome to clearing plates of shellfish to giving me a handwipe to delivery of our check in midst meal; but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Three of us ate rather lightly which seemed to satisfy all, with:
- a salad frisee
- and an onion soup had by one,
- a beautiful looking magret de canard by another,
- and my own assiette de fruits de mer, which was OK but the oysters were not suprising and the shrimp were bland.
Our bill, with a bottle of water and wine, decent bread and butter and three coffees, was 118 E, thus 78,66 E a couple.
Go back? Not even with a reasonable sound level (78.0 dB).
I've often enjoyed a drink there but when we were there Saturday, the waiter "forgot" to give us all of our change. When I called over the Maitre D. he appeared to know what the problem was before I explained it. He spoke to the waiter who returned with the additional 10 euros and said that he had meant to mention that he didn't have all of the change. The entire episode was both suspicious and unfortunate. I'm not sure what is going on there but it isn't good.
