Walking past Charles deGaulle's statue I couldn't help re-reading the statement that "Paris....liberated itself." As the son of a WWII veteran who never held much of an opinion about deGaulle but adored Eisenhower, I've always found this proclamation at odds with the facts, as if the Allies didn't exist. But a few yards away are flags of France and Australia, so maybe their 27,000 dead are being celebrated this VE day or maybe the French are making up for the Gallipoli ceremony a few days ago, honoring the almost 10,000 ANZAC troops who died there.
